A diversion against such life and death matters has to be a strong one. Since he cannot bomb Iran overnight, or nuke Damascus, the president has got twitter at his disposal. Thus, he twits that he, the US that is, for “L'état, C'est Moi“ with Donald (except is not an état but a personal real estate item,) will be buying Greenland. As a statement, as a declaration of “intent“ by a sitting American president, that he will be buying a country and its people in a transaction just like any real estate deal, is beyond absurd, beyond ridiculous. Brexit's got nothing to do with Europe. Rather, it has always been about the cowardice of a Tory party which could not and would not take responsibility and make a decision regarding the sort of party they want to be. A party harking back to a fictitious, louscious, "self sufficient" and confident England, as they imagine the pre-30s times, or indeed a party for supercharhed hypercapitalism, all for deregulation, offshore funds and speculation. Lazy as they are they threw that question at the hapless electorate in the form of a yes/no referendum for an entirely unrelated constititional matter. No wonder then that neither the electorate nor the House of Commons could and would answer that on behalf of the lazy Etonians. It's a great irony then that we are fast approaching the point where the only way out of this mess caused by the unbelievable laziness and idleness of this despicable lot seems to be another referendum. If that happens then we'll have the unique situation where the citizens of this country but also the fellow Europeans will have essentially saved the Tories from themselves, after having wasted three years for nothing. I will run out of words if we reach that point, but it does seem to me increasingly likely.

A few days ago the annual military and schoolchildren marches took place in Athens. It was, to be precise, on the 28th of October, 2019.What is being celebrated on that date is relative. One could argue that it is the "heroic OHI" sent to the Italians in 1940 by the Greek dictator Ioannis Metaxas, following their ultimatum to the effect that Greece surrenders to Italy. Or, as others point out, we are effectively celebrating the start of the war. To complicate matters, Metaxas himself was a fascist in all but name, and was not that unsympathetic to the Italian regime and its strongman. In fact, he copied a lot from them, so there is a long discussion as to what made him send the simple telegram with the "No" to the Italians. The rest is history, as the outnumbered Greeeks managed somehow to push the assaulting Italian army back deep into Albania, thus making inevitable the consequent German invasion and occupation. The Asahi paper wrote back then, prematurely one would say, “Greece does not retain a trace of ancient Greece’s greatness and her end is forgone without the aid of Germany and Japan.” [1]The marches taking place in Athens and in the rest of Greece are in their nature grotesque in that not only they are the remnants of a past in form and their aesthetic, but they are also designed to gloss over everything and to uncrticially promote a sterile notion of national heroism, somehow ingrained in the Greek psyche. This year was particularly nasty as, with the new government which seems to be modelling itself on Pinochet not just in economics, there have been many attempts at revisionism by officials. The minister for "labour and social affairs" for instance, Domna Mihailidou, wrote in Facebook that "today's national day reminds us the values of community contribution and volumteerism [..] let us honour them (our predecessors who fought the Germans) reminding to everyone that volunteering is not just about social contribution but the nation's responsibility." The same woman has also attempted to interpret the students uprising against the colonels in Athens, November 1973, as something that more or less didn't happen. Add to this that the minister for culture (!) sent the police to Athens' cinemas to check for underage viewers of the Jocker movie and you can grasp the kind of "healthy" environment this "new" "non-populist" government is trying to create.So you can imagine now how the government, officials, and a large part of the population saw the impromptu theatrical intervention of a group of students who "intruded" [2] the march in a northern Athens suberb and performed a "silly walk." There have been hundreds of posts and newsitems relating to the event. Even the Daily Mail reported that "Girls spark fury with Monty Python-inspired 'silly walk' during Greece's solemn remembrance service for its military heroes" [3]. Over-analysing Greek intellectuals were quick to point out the connection between John Cleese's silly walk sketch and the effect the war had on the returning "shell shocked" soldiers, many of whom had developed "tics." I am not so sure that the performing students of acting were aware of that possible connection. They did, however, explain their act in writing and their explanation was no less valid. It spoke about "children's games dictated by military chiefs, armies and their soldiers" and how theirs was also an intervention but purely an artistic one, without any aggression. They asked what's militarism got to do with freedom, how is defending freedom what we are being taught in school as "patriotism." They went on to say that the our fight for freedom is "neither an epic, nor a tradegy. It's life itself, in motion." [4] It is clear that the Greek junior minister mentioned above could learn a thing or two from these young actresses.It is a pity that Helena Smith of the Guardian, who has written extensively from Athens about issues which sometimes the Greeks themselves weren't aware of, didn't find the current saga worth writing about. The mayor of the municipality for example, a certain Mr. Vouros, is hellbent to unmask the "ridiculous subjects*" in order to defend the.. honour of his municpality. THE BIG MACHINE - thoughts on the anniversary of Blade RunnerThe Big Machine is already here. Orwell's and Huxley's and the others' dystopias have already materialised, albeit slightly differently to how they imagined them in their details. I always found science fiction novels unconvincing, even more so their adaptation for the big screen. That's because they depicted a future that was always in vitro, it was clinical, sterile and sterilised, odourless and colourless. The future has already arrived, the one exception to those books and films, the Blade Runner, already feels old. Sure, we don't have flying taxis yet, but most of it is here already. Besides, who needs flying taxis when Amazon's drones will deliver everything, from groceries to drugs, within the hour? Cars as we know them are becoming obsolete, and so are the jobs that came with making them. It is clear that we will be moving to fewer "transporters" which will be made by even fewer humans, if any at all, and will be used more. However, that's not the result of a meaningful decision by a mature society, but of the prospect of class action against VW, Toyota, Ford and Fiat. The dystopia is unfolding in all its real human glory, complete with unemployment, sanctions, blood, love affairs, shit, farts, devastation, hope and tears. But also, with its designer drugs, gender fluidity*, the voluntary censorship and its own, self-imposed, peculiar version of Newspeak. Flashpoints around the globe produce death en masse live streamed, shared, "liked" and "disliked." Lone killers massacre people in towns and cities on earth, relaying their acts in real time for the planet to see, with the few real power holders "unable" to do something about it, in the name of "free speech" or simply because it's apparently technically difficult, even "impossible."People have their ability to work or their eligibility to help or even loans assessed by algorithms, and they die as a result, as we speak. The National Identity cards might have never existed in the UK but today they are redundant anyway as we've moved past them to a "credit score" we've all been assigned, regardless of whether we want one or not. States everywhere shrink and the real powerbrokers are becoming fewer and bigger, from the media monopolies to the industrial and financial city states, just as envisaged in the darkest comix books of the 80s. Where there is no meaningful state apparatus to protect their operations, these oligopolies rely on local militias, warlords and terror merchants. Most people might not be able to feed themselves in Mogadishu or Addis, but one can buy a Samsung phone fine, and they can get on Facebook, as long as they've got dollars. There is no central power to speak of, but when it comes to protecting the likes of Google and Aramco the world seems to act as if there was one. And why should there by a central power anyway? It's far too expensive and, as DDR showed, ultimately unsustainable. It requires far too many human employees for something that can be achieved in a much cheaper and easier way and in fact without any resistance. No one is following us in the streets, nor are they explicitly listening to what we are saying. They don't need to. We have handed our most intimate and banal "data" and thoughts to them on a plate voluntarily, for it's so convenient to be able to share our calendars, address books, photos and anniversary memories with just one click. As it's full of human tragedy, happiness, pain, glory, this is the actual future. Just as they imagined it, but not quite.--* I hold nothing against it, it's an observation of the times, not criticism.

For instance, English is the only European language I am aware of in which one can have a rock band called "Man Eating Sharks," in which case we can never be sure as to who's eating whom. But the chief reason for my admiration is that anything is allowed in English, unlike French where you can have words banned by acts of parliament or even by committees, or Greek where you can have an entire language made up and enforced upon the hapless Greeks by their parliament. To make my point clear in these drunken moments I used to offer the following example"Carry on like that and I'll kebab you!"as a perfectly valid sentence. I am not so sure about the epistemology underpinning this affair. Maxine Peake was factually wrong in her statement regarding Israeli military training provided to the US security services, training which according to her included the knee to neck death lock. It should be obvious to anyone that no security force anywhere on the planet needs external training to perform their acts of brutality, let alone the US one. Where the US did ask for external assistance on how to "deal" with certain peoples was in Abu Ghraib. I am not going to expand on this but a Google search should be sufficient. Having said that I will emphasize again that Maxine Peake was wrong. Still, there are a few points that need highlighting and please do debate them, it's just how I think about it.1. Maxine Peake didn't accuse Israel but the US. Specifically, she accused the US security forces of applying techniques shown to them by Israeli officers of sorts.2. Even if she was accusing Israel, that still doesn't count as antisemitism. It's wrong, yes, but she's stating that the state of Israel is engaging in such tactics and exporting the technique.3. Rebecca Long-Bailey linked to the entire interview. Correct me if I am wrong, but she didn's specifically highlight that part. The interview touched upon many issues.Based on the above observations, and whilst I understand that Labour had a massive issue with, and has been accused of, antisemitism and lost quite a few votes because of it, I still think that the antisemitism accusation is as innacurate as Maxine Peake's assertion. I also think that Rebecca Long-Bailey's sacking was heavy handed.I am quite open to any differing views but please do not take this post of mine as an invitation to abuse, or a statement to the effect that I myself am antisemite. I am just trying to keep a clear mind.

Did I tell you that I came to Athens solo? We were meant to leave Corfu on Thursday. At 17:30 we'd be catching the boat to Igoumenitsa, and from there we'd catch the 20:30 bus to get us into Athens at 02:30. There was an earlier bus at 12:00, which could potentially lead us into Athens at 18:00, but I didn't trust me and her coordinating at 07:30 in the morning without my turning murderer.So on Thursday, before Sharon had slipped in her obligatory leopard swimming outfit ready to get to her favourite chaise long, one which she had very skilfully blagged from the old but still energetic owner of that unmistakably teenage British boozer, all set with my Bose speaker and her fine collection of Caribbean and African R&B tunes, we'd agreed that we'd check on each other at around 15:00 and start moving. I had to hand the moped back, evacuate my room and find us a taxi to the port. Anyway, I wanted to be there a bit early.Rather, by 16:00, after a series of unanswered messages to Sharon which led me to finally go to find her, I'd finished packing, had got rid of the moped, and evacuated the room. What I needed now was to find a taxi and somehow commit Sharon to leaving the seaside mosquito netted little palace of hers and the “headfucker” cocktails*, getting ready and miraculously appearing standing next to her luggage whilst a taxi smoothly rolled its way to us.In fact, thanks to her genius, an arrangement was made with our hosts to give us a lift instead. At their suggestion we'd leave at 17:00 after all, since the journey to the port was only 10 minutes, and we didn't really see why time to get our act together, check passports, location forms and other trivial stuff over a pint in the cafe at the port was time well spent. Still, perhaps owing to my untravelled nature, I was a bit stressed, and so I managed to somehow come up with a modified plot. I suggested that Nikos was overworked, tired and busy, which he clearly was, and maybe Irene could take us there. Happily Irene could indeed give us a lift, but only there and then as she still needed to take the two families kids to the pool. For he record, there and then was 16:45 now.Eventually we made it to the port at exactly 17:00. As a native speaker I should go to the ticket booth to sort everything out, whilst Sharon would remain with Irene and some of the kids in the small little car, which now also served as a pizza oven owing to the lovely afternoon sun and temperatures.It was when I started filling in the forms for both, perhaps unsurprisingly, that I found out that those of us who are unvaccinated needed to possess a valid rapid test. Sadly, we couldn't get one just at that time of the day. However, there was still a glimpse of hope since it was possible that no one really checked those on the boat, but that was something one could only find out by going through the whole process and embarking. As a general and possibly unrelated note, this is perhaps easier done when one has a bit of extra time.Sharon's immediare, crisp and clear response was a “we are not travelling today,” which felt not unlike a cannon that had just fired. I therefore shot back fast and sharp that I AM travelling, and that it's up to her to see what she's doing next. She immediately retorted "that's shit brov," and "if we were in Africa and I left you here like that" it "would be a disgrace." I didn't feel prepared to respond in kind, saying for instance "but this is definitely not Africa, sis." Instead, I cried that I had to see my dad, a visit which surely was one of the top reasons for my coming to Greece, another being us having such a great time.So I got on the boat and sure nobody checked anything. One simply had to drop the signed form in a box and show their tickets. I found that out by 17:12, so even though they'd just left the port by then with her fuming, there might still be some time, if Irene or someone else could perhaps bring her back. Deep inside me I wished that she wouldn't get a lift, but the possibility was still there.It's Sunday now. Many a protagonist has graced this soap opera with their appearance, one of them Sakis, a Greek anarchist around my age. I have had no contact with Sharon since that amazing Thursday, but I received a series of messages on my phone yesterday from him. The messages were rather weird, as they had a format that resembled mini reports, and they drew a picture of Sharon having spent days in beautiful Kavos in a manner of now you see me, now you don't. Don't get me wrong, but there was a certain whiff of said messages being dictated by this formidable woman on the spot, even that they were perhaps designed to elicit some kindness and sympathy and togetherness from me. Could it be that Sakis was acting as her typist, using his phone, I wondered.They then drifted towards the direction "I don't know where she is, perhaps I am in her black books because I didn't always respond to her straight away,” and "from what I've heard, she's leaving tomorrow (Sunday)." I then asked whether he knew where she was leaving to, to which he answered "Athens, I think." At that point I said “that's great, we'll have a wicked time,” and that perhaps I can leave my keys with her and get back to England. Bearing in mind that I have had a few drinks and anarchist conversations with said Sakis before, and that I'd lent him my camera to do a photo shoot of Nikos's burgers, I then proceeded to ask him whether he was typing these messages with Sharon. Alamingly, he didn't reply.That was then followed up by one last message of mine asking him whether I'd upset him, especially as an anarchist, with the suggestion that he was acting as a proxy or even typist, and swore to him that the only reason for my insinuation was that the texts themselves read nothing like his and a lot like Sharon's.So, here I am this early Sunday morning, with no response from Sakis and no sign of her. There are only two possibilities then. Either these were his messages, and therefore Sharon will simply turn up, in which case I don't know which strategy to employ. Or that the messages were dictated, and therefore Sharon knows that I know that. Although typically that should mean that Sharon wouldn't have the stomach or desire to come over here, a very sad other possibility scares me. Sharon may well come here knowing that I know, but pretending that she doesn't.EPILOGUESharon has told me at length how’s she's being entangled in messed up friendships and relationships. One positive outcome of that though is that Sharon has got her self a book, a manual if you wish, which explains everything there is to know about Narcissistic Personality Disorder, a condition which she’s more or less an expert of now. In fact, we spent a few evenings with her kindly analysing to me behaviours of certain people through this very lens. It was fascinating, I must say. I don’t know how this fits in here, but there have been another two instances where Sharon made up conversations I apparently had with other people. I would have got very worried indeed about the state of my mind, if it wasn’t for the fact that luckily I hadn’t spoken to said people at all. I fear that she’s delusional, or that perhaps she was throwing her nets in empty to check if they come back out full - as a Greek fishermen proverb goes. If the latter, then one could find descriptions of such tactics in the DSM, under headings that pertain to manipulation, psycho- and sociopathy. Then again, as I am sure you would guess, my late dear mother and I had at some point come to the conclusion that at times psychopath is simply another word for “arsehole.”* They are not to be confused with cocktails. O νεοέλληνας φιλελές ή φιλέλας είναι ον αντιφατικό και απαντάται αποκλειστικά στην Ελλάδα. Πάνω απόλα όμως ο φιλελές είναι ειδικός στα του χρηματιστηρίου και της οικονομίας. Αγαπημένη έκφραση του φιλελέ είναι το "σύντροφοι".

H ΔΑΠ είναι ένας μηχανισμός εγγυημένης ανέλιξης. Συνήθως κανείς γίνεται μέλος της ΔΑΠ μετά από πορεία στην ΟΝΝΕΔ, οπότε έχει ήδη μαζέψει αρκετά κουπόνια ανέλιξης. Και οι δύο μηχανισμοί είναι κάπως σαν τις Εκκλησίες - με την έννοια πως κανείς κερδίζει περισσότερα ανάλογα με τον αριθμό νέων μελών που εγγράφει. Αυτό βέβαια αφορά τα κοινά μέλη, όσοι προέρχονται από εδραιωμένες οικογένειες βλέπουν τη δουλειά του προσηλυτισμού αλλά και τη ρουτίνα της οργάνωσης αφ' υψηλού. Όπως το αντιλαμβάνονται, αυτά αφορούν την πλέμπα. Η ΔΑΠ είναι λοιπόν διαφορετικά πράγματα για τις δύο ομάδες. Για τους μεν πληβείους είναι ένας μηχανισμός συλλογής κουπονιών ανέλιξης τα οποία μπορούν να εξαγοραστούν στο μέλλον είτε με αναθέσεις είτε με διορισμούς, υπαγωγή σε χρηματοδοτήσεις κ.λπ. Για τα μεγαλοστελέχη είναι κυρίως ο τρόπος με τον οποίο παίρνουν το πτυχίο τους αφού εάν δεν είναι ανίκανοι είναι τουλάχιστον τεμπέληδες. Βέβαια η ΔΑΠ ασχολείται και με την "αναψυχή" και "διασκέδαση." Στα πλαίσια αυτά οργανώνει θεματικά πάρτι όπως "Μονί Βατοπεδίου", "ΠΙΟ ΔΝΤ" κ.λπ, με τις ανάλογες γαλάζιες αφίσες. Ωστόσο και σ' αυτά τα πάρτι παίζουν ταξικές διαφορές αφού οι πιο περιζήτητες δαπίτισσες περιτριγυρίζουν τους γόνους μεγαλοστελεχών αλλά κι αυτούς που είναι φανερό πως θα ανέλθουν - αυτούς που δηλαδή που ήδη επωφελούνται από το σύστημα.

Tα Σοτυρωπουληκά οικονομικά αναφέρονται στις θεωρίες του γνωστού οικονομολόγου εκ Πατρών Σοτυρώπουλου. Αυτό που τα κάνει να ξεχωρίζουν είναι η χωρίς φιοριτούρες προσέγγισή τους στην οικονομία και η χρήση δοκιμασμένων από την αγορά μεθόδων για την αξιολόγηση της κατάστασης και της υγείας της οικονομίας. Ως γνωστόν, ο διάσημος οικονομολόγος από την Πάτρα έστηνε τον εαυτό του σε ένα μικρό σκαμνί στα διόδια της Κορίνθου, οπότε μετρούσε τους τροχούς των διερχόμενων αυτοκινήτων και διαιρούσε με το τέσσερα για να συμπεράνει τον αριθμό τους. Πρώτον, για να σταματήσουν οι σκεπτικιστές που χρησιμοποιούσαν κάθε είδους περίπλοκες συναρτήσεις για την αξιολόγηση της οικονομίας ή αλλιώς ανεπίσημα στοιχεία από ανθρώπους που παραπονιόντουσαν ότι δεν μπορούν να τα βγάλουν πέρα. Δεύτερον, αυτό οφειλόταν στο υπόβαθρο, στην τροχιά του από την παργαμτική ζωή, όχι από τα σαλόνια των αριστερών ή τον πάγκο με τα τυριά στου Σκλαβενίτη.

Εγκλήματα κατά της ανθρωπότητας είναι ορισμένες πράξεις που διαπράττονται σκόπιμα ως μέρος μιας συστηματικής πολιτικής, που στρέφεται κατά αμάχων μειονοτήτων, θρησκευτικών ή εθνικών, σε περιόδους πολέμου ή ειρήνης. Διαφέρουν από τα εγκλήματα πολέμου επειδή δεν είναι μεμονωμένα ή σποραδικά γεγονότα που διαπράττονται από μερίδα του στρατεύματος, αλλά είναι πράξεις κατά την εκτέλεση μιας πολιτικής. Αποτελούν μέρος είτε μιας κυβερνητικής πολιτικής (παρόλο που οι δράστες δεν χρειάζεται να ταυτιστούν με αυτήν την πολιτική), είτε μιας ευρείας πρακτικής θηριωδών που ανέχεται ή προωθείται από μια κυβέρνηση ή μια de facto αρχή. Παράσιτο στη βιολογία χαρακτηρίζεται ο οργανισμός (ζωικός ή φυτικός), ο οποίος ζει και αναπτύσσεται εις βάρος ενός άλλου οργανισμού, που αποκαλείται ξενιστής.
